Ekurhuleni is a metropolitan municipality and important center in South Africa. The municipality is also described as ‘the workshop of the country’. At the moment, MAP is building a masterplan together with other stakeholders for Ekurhuleni to become the number one Manufacturing Hub of Africa. The strong combination of local stakeholders, the MAP approach and experiences for the Brainport region in the Netherlands, is a good starting point to set up a roadmap that is pragmatic and actionable for stakeholders.
By developing the roadmap to transform the supply chain based in Ekurhuleni, there will be a focus on actionable and broadly supported guidelines. The project will analyze the supply chain requirements for local sourcing and the Ekurhuleni manufacturing potential. The development of the roadmap is a joined effort from all stakeholders. This requires flexibility to adjust the approach, but also ensures maximum involvement throughout the process.
MAP has been asked by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland, RVO), to develop the plan in collaboration with several stakeholders. Next to building a Masterplan to become the number one Manufacturing Hub of Africa, MAP will investigate the chances for Dutch businesses to stimulate the development and growth of local manufacturing in South Africa. The Ekurhuleni project follows Prime Minister Rutte’s economic mission in November last year. In addition, it builds on the existing cooperation with the City of Breda that started in 2012, which aims to stimulate social housing and urban renewal.
